There are far too many products in the market that promise a solid night’s sleep. You have overpriced beds, to memory foam inserts, to sound machines, to air distribution systems, to fancy tracking watches and pillows that do the same. Some of it may help, but a lot of them don’t do more than help you fall asleep quicker. However, keeping you asleep is another story. Sure those watches can tell you where you are waking, but they don’t solve the problem.
One of my favorites is the air distribution options like BedJet, but these typically have time constraints, they are usually a bit loud (not bad, but slightly above soothing) when operating, and boy do they tax your outlets out (BedJet pretty much maxes your circuit out). They don’t stay on throughout the evening, nor do they fluctuate with you to keep you asleep. Although they do work in some senses, they don’t seem to be a cure-all when it comes to temperature.
Moona brings a new idea to the table that is similar but treats your head like a processor in a computer. Their idea is to continuously pump water into your pillow (well, into an insert you slide into your pillow) to help cool your head as you drift to sleep, and then maintain the temperature throughout the night to try to keep you there.
It actually looks like an enclosed water cooler for a computer, like what you would find from a company like Thermaltake, Corsair and so on. One end slides into your pillow and the other functions like an alarm clock looking device that sits by your bed. It allows you to control the temperature manually and has built-in sensors for things like room brightness, humidity, and room temperature.
It begins by cooling your pillow down to help speed the process of falling asleep. It then tracks you as you sleep and adjusts the temperature a few degrees higher to a neutral, yet still cool, level to help keep you there. When it comes time to wake up, it slowly begins to raise the temperature to promote your body to naturally wake up in a calm manner.
Of course, it comes with an app for your smartphone so that you can track your sleep history, adjust settings such as your temperature profile, and set the time you’d like to wake.
The entire idea sounds wonderful and I wish we could test it out ourselves to see how well it works. For now, however, they are still going through clinical trials. They already passed their crowdfunding phase through Kickstarter and have been working on it for over two years. They plan to start shipping sometime in the spring. Hopefully, they can meet their goal and hopefully we can learn more about it come time, as just about everyone would like to discover a way to help them sleep that actually works well. I know my own body responds quite well (both good and bad) to temperatures while sleeping. The ability to try to regulate some of that sounds great.
For now, you can learn more about Moona at their website here.
