Sony is joining the ranks of gaming systems that support external USB hard drives, with their upcoming software update 4.50 (codenamed Sasuke) for the Playstation 4. Currently, they are only rolling it out to beta testers, however they plan to release a firm launch date for the update in the near future.
It has always been relatively easy for the most part to upgrade the internal drive in your PS4. However, if you would still prefer to use an external drive for an added level of user-friendliness, then this news is for you! With the new update, you will be able to simply plug in an external drive via USB. Just like with the Xbox One, you can save everything including games, apps and everything else, to the external drive. It will all appear on your Content Launcher normally.
This gives you the ability to use a drive up to 8TB in size, giving you more than enough gaming space for even the hardest gamers in the family.
Sony is rolling the update out to beta testers starting today, so if you participate in their program, you might want to jump on it now. Along with it comes a handful of other updates and enhancements such as custom wallpapers for your home screen, an improved Quick Menu, improved notifications and the ability to playback 3D Blu-ray movies using the Playstation VR headset (with more features to be announced in the near future as it gets closer to release).
This should prove to be one of the hottest updates yet coming from Sony.
