One of the things that we used to really enjoy with the Lumia phones when Nokia was behind Microsoft’s flagships, was the use of ZEISS glass for the camera lens which helped lead to some incredible images (alongside the other great specs the cameras had to offer at the time). Now it looks like Sony is going to take advantage of ZEISS as well with their new Xperia flagship, the Xperia 1 II, which will potentially help lead to some great imagery from this new model as well.
This doesn’t come at any surprise since Sony is one of the leaders when it comes to digital photography. Their mirror-less cameras coming in just a step higher in quality than Panasonic when it comes to still images.
The new flagship’s triple-camera 12MP setup will feature ZEISS optics with “T*” (T-Star) anti-reflective coating to assist with image quality. It can handle up to 20fps AF tracking burst and a slew of other great features like 4K and 5G. 4K extends past the camera (which is able to shoot video at 4K up to 60p) to also include a 4K OLED screen as well. All the things you’d hope to see in a flagship right now.
Of course, this isn’t the first time that Sony has brought ZEISS into its products. They have had a long-standing relationship when it comes to various camcorders and digital cameras. Now it seems smartphones are the next step for this relationship.
Additional specs to celebrate is the fact that it will feature a headphone jack unlike some of these other models from companies like Samsung. It will feature Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6 on both sides (front and back), USB-C for data and charging, an IP65/68 rating for water and dust protection, 8GB of memory, 256GB of storage, optional micro SD card slot for extended storage, and an internal 4,000mAh battery,
It’s always good to see a modern-day smartphone headed in the right direction. It would have been nice to see a higher pixel count to work with, but this is a good start. We won’t truly know the results until we can get our hands on some sample shots, and that will happen in good time. It will be interesting to see how the new model competes with some of the dominating brands/models that currently have a solid grip on the market.
