SwitchBot came out swinging at IFA 2026 in Berlin, and this time (once again) it’s aiming squarely at your front door. The company just unveiled the Lock Ultra Max, the centerpiece of a new bundle called the Lock Ultra Max Vision Pro Combo, and it’s packed with enough unlock methods to make your keychain feel like a museum piece.
Like all of SwitcBot’s locks, this is a retrofit smart lock, meaning it clips onto your existing lock cylinder from the inside rather than forcing you to rip out your current hardware. At the moment, it’s built for European-style doors and works with the existing cylinder instead of replacing the whole lock. That’s good news if you’ve been hesitant to commit to a smart lock because you didn’t want to mess with your door’s guts.
The company says the lock’s new UltraDrive brushless motor spins at 160 rpm, which the company claims is more than three times faster than its previous Lock Ultra. Flip it into what SwitchBot calls Max Mode, and it can unlock in as little as 1.1 seconds. If that feels a little too abrupt for a 2 a.m. arrival home, there’s also a quieter mode designed to keep things discreet when you don’t want the whole household waking up (we’ve all been there).
Where things get really interesting is how many ways you can actually get through the door. SwitchBot is offering entry by fingerprint, passcode, NFC card, facial recognition, and even palm-vein recognition — that last one scans the actual veins in your hand, which sounds like something out of a spy movie but is apparently becoming a real feature on smart locks now. Combine all the options together and SwitchBot is touting up to 19 total ways to unlock your door, which is either extremely convenient or extremely excessive, depending on how you look at it.
The full combo doesn’t stop at the lock itself. It also bundles in a keypad with facial recognition built in (the lock will eventually also be available by itself), along with a Matter-enabled hub, so the whole setup can tie into whatever smart home ecosystem you’re already using. And for anyone worried about compatibility, SwitchBot claims the lock supports around 99 percent of European locks, covering common cylinder types across the UK and mainland Europe, with adapters available for the odd exceptions.
Here’s the catch, though: right now, as mentioned, this is a Europe-only release. The combo has launched specifically for UK and EU homes, and there’s no word yet on if or when it’ll make its way stateside. Given how many smart home companies treat the US as an afterthought for lock hardware (thanks to our wildly different door standards and strong regulations), don’t be shocked if American buyers are left waiting a while.
Would a palm-vein scanner on your front door feel like next-level convenience to you, or is that a little too much smart home for comfort? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
