Tesla continues down the path of raising its prices for FSD (full self-drive) today, raising it from $12K to $15K. Marking the second price increase for FSD this year and pricing another group of consumers out of reach.
There have been many users who took to communities like Reddit to share their thoughts when the price increased to $8K back in 2020. Many of which said it was too expensive and that they wouldn’t touch it anymore. Since then, it raised to $10K, then $12K (earlier this year), and now the $15K price tag we now see starting today. Each time, increasing the number of users who opted to not even bother with it.
At $15K, this is quite the price tag for a software update and you can bet that there are more consumers than ever that will walk away from the chance of upgrading. It’s bad enough that EV vehicle prices have inflated so much that Tesla doesn’t seem to be coming anywhere close to reaching the affordable competitive market price of average ICE (gas) vehicles as it had hoped. From here, the price will continue as the company sees fit with every “major update” to the FSD software.
The latest price hike comes with the news that the current FSD Beta version may roll out to a much larger number of vehicles this year. Taking one step closer toward getting the feature for city streets navigation (while using FSD) out there for the public (eventually). The company feels that the coming updates are significant enough to warrant the additional price hike and there are some rumors that the price may go up (yet( again by next March.
That news even has me (a big fan of Tesla) wondering “WTF?” as it feels like these price hikes shouldn’t happen until the company can prove that such updates are now readily available and impressive enough to win over the general population (aka, put up, or shut up). For now, it just feels like continued amount of unproven hype to justify another increase.
Given, that is just my own opinion. There are many out there that feel differently. Do you think the price increase make sense? Do you still plan on making the jump to FSD now or in the near future? Feel free to share your thoughts below in the comments as we’d love to hear them.
In the meantime, the price for Enhanced Autopilot has remains the same. So if you were only interested in this upgrade, there is still time to take advantage of its current pricing ($6K).
