Now, in our last story, we just got through with bragging about an 8TB hard drive from Seagate, and how it works out to be an excellent backup solution. However, Western Digital (WD) has announced the release of a 20TB external solution for desktop computers, that more than doubles that of the Seagate.
Of course you have to consider the fact that most consumers either wouldn’t be able to afford something like this or simply just wouldn’t have enough data to put on it. However, it doesn’t change the fact that 20TB of capacity is pretty cool, and a lot of enthusiasts would drool at a chance at owning one anyway. Regardless, this one will be targeting professional industries and will more than likely sell a bunch.
The external drive solution is a RAID-optimized system, containing two WD Red HDDs inside, and can accomplish speeds of up to 360MB per second–allowing for efficient backups, and the perfect transfer speed and capacity to work with large files (ie, editing 4K video and above).
It features a USB 3.1 Type-C connection to help deliver content at the speed promised with, and supports 256-bit AES hardware encryption to protect your valuable information. It will also be available in smaller capacities ranging as low as 4TB (six models in all).
As I said, it won’t be affordable to the average consumer. Something like this would obviously launch with a high price tag–and that it has. The 20TB model will cost you $799 if you’d like to get your hands on one ($799.99 for 20TB, $599.99 for 16TB, $419.99 for 12TB, $329.99 for 8TB, $289.99 for 6TB and $259.99 for 4TB), so will probably require a pretty darn good reason for buying one, if you did. Regardless, they are available right and you can get any of the models via the link just below. If you find yourself with one faster than we do, feel free to reach out to us with what you find!
