Western Digital has started shipping its new 24TB drives centered around NAS users, both commercial and prosumer. A great option for those that have a lot of data in need of backing up or storage for media servers and the like.
The new 24TB WD Red Pro drives offer RAID-optimized NAS setups a little extra push in capacity over the company’s 22TB models. A small bump, but still a lot of capacity to take advantage of. It makes use of helium drive technology with 512MB cache, 7200 RPM, and up to 287MB/s max transfer speeds. Rated for up to 550TBs in data movement (workload) per year, this model is designed to last in 24/7 environments that push a lot of data.
With an MSRP of $569, the drive is a little pricey, but not so much when compared to SSD or some of the release prices we’ve seen in the past. Regardless, only pro-users will be rushing to get their hands on one of these. But for those who need them, the specs are there when it comes to capacity, speed, and robust performance.
Currently, the new model is available via Western Digital’s website. It should make its way to retailers like Amazon in the near future. However, for now, these other platforms still only list the Red Pro series up to 22TB. Likely, the company is focusing on its bigger clients first and will then shift focus to general retail.
