In case you thought NVMe was already the best thing out there, think again. Manufacturers have been pushing forward to the next generation of NVMe, making the technology better than ever, all thanks to the move toward PCIe 4.0. Now it’s WD’s turn to do so and the new products are quite impressive.
Not all of WD’s launches have been ultra-competitive within the NVMe world, but the Black-series seem to be keeping with things and this is another example of such. The new WD Black SN850 NVMe SSD features some of the best speeds currently available, putting them up there with the likes of Samsung’s 980 SSD.
This includes read speeds of up to 7,000MB/s and write speeds of up to 5,100MB’s (4,100-5,100 depending on the capacity option chosen). Thank you PCIe 4.0!
The new SN850 series will be available in capacities of 500GB ($149 MSRP), 1TB ($229 MSRP), and 2TB ($449 MSRP), and will be launching by the end of this month (October). The latter of the options still being quite expensive, but usually only professionals push as far as 2TB right now anyway. 500GB and 1TB still make for excellent boot drives while a normal spinning drive for everything else is still the optimal way to go when it comes to cost-per-GB (unless you have a cash pool to pull from for your next setup).
Initially, you’ll only be able to get your hands on a model without a heatsink (for some reason) as the heatsink release of the model won’t be available until the first quarter of next year (2021). This could be due to a manufacturing bottleneck somewhere, but it is good they are at least getting what they can out since this would make for a great upgrade for the new PS5 when it comes out (for capacity expansion).
