It looks like another “doh!” moment for Window Update as Microsoft discovered a bug with the latest update to Windows 10, titled “May 2019 Update”, which is supposed to bring everyone up to date with all of the latest features and enhancements for Windows.
Unfortunately, it has the ability to cause issues if you use external storage solutions, that includes USB drives (thumb drives or external hard drives) and SD media. Microsoft says that the OS could face inappropriate drive reassignment during the update.
Fortunately, Windows is attempting to block most users who are using such storage solutions from downloading the update to begin with. If Windows detects one of these devices or cards plugged into the system, it won’t let the update through, and it will throw up an error instead that states that your hardware is not ready for the version of Windows 10.
If you do not have anything connected, then Windows will attempt to run the update come time. For those that do have something, you can simply remove/unplug the media from your system, reboot and re-attempt the update process. Everything should go just fine. Upon finishing the update, you can plug/insert your media back into your system and carry on.
In the event that a user does not see an announcement or coverage (such as what you are reading right now) about this, they will be able to update in the future when Microsoft rolls out a future update to resolve this.
