Microsoft Paint (or MS Paint) has actually come a long way over the years despite not looking as if it ever experienced any major changes outside of the ribbon menu design. It works better now with things like transparencies and exists as a standalone app via the Microsoft Store instead of being baked into Windows 11. But with updates comes bugs that may creep up from time to time.
One of these bugs that users have been seeing a lot lately is the app crashing when the user clicks on the text tool (to add text to the image). If you experience this, the app will immediatly freeze up when you click on the tool and eventually close/crash.
If this is happening to you, fear not as you aren’t alone. Quite a few users seem to be experiencing it and for whatever reason, it has something to do with your custom installed fonts within Windows. These fonts can sometimes experience compatibility issues, and although they may work with everything else you installed, they might not like Paint.
The solution is to head to Windows Settings, click on Personalization, and Fonts.

What you want to do is look at the first so many fonts listed to see if any of them are missing a name. The font name displays at the bottom left of each square just above the number of “font faces”. If there is no name listed, uninstall the font, as for some reason, it isn’t properly installed within Windows. You can do this by clicking on the three dots at the top-right of each square. A menu will pop down with the option to uninstall.
These fonts will almost always be at the top of the list, so they should be easy to fine. You may try re-installing them afterware. Just make sure the font name is displaying properly if you do. If it doesn’t you may have to find a more current version of that font.
As long as you don’t have anymore fonts with missing names, you should be able to open Microsoft Paint and click on the tool to start making use of it again.
