Social media is supposed to be easy and free, which is why it is so inclusive, informative, and bloated with everyone’s thoughts and opinions. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case anymore as a few social media platforms feel things should change and that these services should be seen as a paid privilege and not an open community simply funded by ads (and selling your private information, of course). Which is why Sony is pulling support for X (previously Twitter) from its PlayStation consoles.
Ever since Elon Musk bought Twitter, it has never been the same. It has been a constant deathmatch tournament between the billionaire, the company, its users, and just about everyone else in the world. Turning it from a massive miscellanea of user interaction.
PlayStation (PS4/PS5) users received a notification that Sony was dropping support for the X platform next week (November 13th). This change will mean that you won’t be able to view or directly share content to the social network from the consoles any longer.
Why would Sony do such a thing? Money, of course. X has been demanding an excessive amount of cash for access to its API from companies since it has been losing so much money ever since Elon Musk bought the company and then started gutting and rebranding it in every way. So it is looking for every possible way to raise funds and turn it into an even bigger company than it was. Assuming it ever works, as for now it seems that everyone is turning away from it looking for alternative options.
Microsoft already abandoned the platform on its Xbox consoles earlier this year in April and it wouldn’t be surprising if Nintendo decided to go this route as well. These companies just doesn’t want to spend tens of thousands of dollars every month for API access on a platform that never required this for so many years. There are other networks out there that will be more than happy to team up with these companies so you will likely see an interesting shift in popular platforms in the near future when it comes to gaming.
X should focus on making itself affordable, accessible, and as user-friendly as possible for everyone. Users, groups, & businesses alike. This is what has made Twitter so successful since the start. Not overpriced, inaccessible, and impractical. Where major companies like Sony and Microsoft are pulling out because it’s just too much for what it’s worth.
