It seems like it wasn’t that long ago that we were going over the 2015 Avantage models and here we are again. Given, a little late than normal as usually we would have had a piece out by now but it took a little longer to get our hands on one.
I have to say that we have become overly biased when it comes to the Aventage series because of three major variables that Yamaha seems to nail every year: performance, features and price. The most (obviously) important variables that make up a product’s score. Keep in mind that we have strict expectations when it comes to audio. We have a large demo room/lab specifically built for testing such products, and it is quite finely acoustically corrected based on so many things, such as the square footage of the room and the items, furniture and building materials within it.
So here we are with the latest RX-A3060 11.2 channel AVR receiver. A 10-star winner, now three years in a row, the Aventage series continues to amaze the AV community. This AVR has also stolen the 2016 Editor’s Choice award this year.
The RX-A3060 is the sixth generation of Yamaha’s 11.2 channel selection in their Aventage line-up, featuring up to 9.2 channels that it can power directly with another 2.0 channels using the pre-outs to another amp (or amps depending on your setup). A flagship among all of their AVR products, it is a powerful addition to your viewing room, let it be a living room or private theater. It features the familiar whopping 150-watts output per channel (8 ohms), feeding just about any speaker you pick off the store shelf. Or if you’re like us, off the shelf of your favorite hi-fi reference audio distributor.
If that isn’t enough, you can pre-out every single channel to an external amp and spend all sorts of money delivering however much wattage you need as the RX-A3060 handles everything else. Of course, the average person will be hitting their budget with the receiver alone, so we will work with that for now.
So some of the biggest features to highlight in regards to the new model include some of the familiar features so many have grown to enjoy with the last few models, with new improvements and some additional options to add to its weight even the more.
You get full passthrough for all of your favorites, including 4K, HDR, 3D, HDCP 2.2 and so forth. It upscales your non-4K content and supports HDMI 2.0 for full 4K/60p. You will find a number of your favorite music services familiar to the Yamaha line, including Pandora, Spotify, Napster, SiriusXM Internet Radio and a general online radio selection via vTuner Internet Radio. You can even stream music from PCs on the network. Now you package in support for all of the latest sound formats such as DTS:X and Dolby Atmos and you once again have the receiver that does it all.
So I’ll start diving into the streaming bit of things since Yamaha has always done good with this. Especially the quality you get from SiriusXM on these AVRs. Since the RX-A3010 model, where it all started for us, we developed an instant appreciation for listening to SiriusXM on these receivers due to the level of quality we heard in the stream. Channels like Coffee House can through with such clarity that we found ourselves piping the content down to the speakers around the office throughout the day. Since then, sadly, SiriusXM seems to have removed Coffee House from the selection on Yamaha receivers (they have yet to rectify that), but the majority of all the other stations are still there providing plenty of content. Pandora also streams quite good as well, along with just about anything you stream to this with. Mostly thanks to the on-board DAC processors that really bring out the color in compressed or streaming music.
If online isn’t your thing, you can stream nearly anything you want using a wireless device such as your phone or tablet as well as PCs on the network. It supports both Bluetooth and WiFi built right into the receiver, so your options are endless. You can stream from your mobile devices using an app or you can see some of your connected devices on your network such as PCs to tap into their shared media files, directly from the receiver.
Your ability to stream music to the receiver from your mobile device includes full support for MusicCast. MusicCast allows you to stream music from your phone (via the MusicCast app) to wireless speakers and devices on your network, allowing for a single speaker or two, or even multi-room setups. The receiver falls into the list as one of those devices. If you wanted additional speakers and devices, you can find them online or in-store to expand on such with.
On top of MusicCast, you can also stream wirelessly from the receiver itself using Bluetooth. It can wirelessly connection to a pair of headphones or a Bluetooth speaker to stream music to.
The receiver also offers up to multiple zones where you can have separate speakers ran to in your house (wired) so that content can be controlled separately in those rooms. Your ability to do this and the number of zones (max of 3) depends on the number of speakers in your main room because it sacrifices from the 11.2 channel number to allow speakers within those zones. More like you sacrifice those zones in order to obtain the total 11.2 opportunity.
To keep adding things up, beyond being able to stream via Bluetooth or WiFi, it also features WiFi Direct mode by streaming its own WiFi SSID. With Wireless Direct mode (WiFi), you are able to connect your device directly to the receiver using your tablet or phone. This is pretty much the same idea as AirPlay but for any of your other devices that support streaming music to devices on the network. Of course, when you make use of this feature, you will not be able to access the internet since the device will be directly connected to the receiver vs your network at that point. This option is usually for users who do not have a wireless router in their home, thus they can use this features as a backup. All of this is done via the AV Controller App (available here in the Apple store or here in the Google Play store).
Of course, on top of that, it also supports Apple Airplay and Spotify Connect.
Speaking of the app, with the AV Controller App, you can manage the various functions of your receiver remotely. This allows you to control volume, DSP selection, input (including streaming options), speaker layout and lots more.
USB support is also superb with the RX-A3060, as it supports all of your favorite formats, including those for the audiophiles out there. Simply plug in a USB drive (thumb stick or drive) and browse all of your files and play them directly from the receiver. It supports, MP3, WAV, WMA, AIFF, FLAC, DSD and MPEG-AAC. All of this, including the same formats if streamed around your network from other devices are enhanced using its high-resolution music enhancer that can bring these tracks to life–up to 96 kHz / 24-bit.
Factor in multiple ultra-high performance ESS Technology 192 kHz / 32-bit DAC processors inside that bring your reference listening to life in all of your movies and music.
Every single time we test out one of these models, we find ourselves listening to hours upon hours of hi-res audio formats such as FLAC and DSD. Blanketing ourselves with music that causes us to float away as we sink deep into our chairs. Given, it does help that we always test using a great selection of reference speakers from companies like Paradigm and Martin Logan.
Now I’ll move over to the latest sound formats you get to enjoy with these receivers. For a few years now, Yamaha has been including support for both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, improving on such as each new generation model makes its way to the public. These two sound formats are changing the way we experience media by taking you away from your normal channel-driven formats and taking the new approach of object-based sound. With object based sound, it doesn’t matter how many speaker you have in your setup. Where you used to have separate soundtracks in media such as DVDs or Blu-ray, sound can now simply move around the room naturally using a single soundtrack layer, taking advantage of whatever speakers may be present. This allows for one track to rule them allow. The receiver decodes this and shares it across whatever speakers are present. So how much you experience of that field of sound depends on your setup.
The new formats use a new decimal range in your channels of speakers to add speakers to the roof above your head known as “height speakers”. This gives you more of a surround feel and the object driven sound helps to create a more natural experience as the sound moves virtually within the space. This really helps movies to pop right out as you are watching them.
Like models in the past, the RX-A3060 comes with Yamaha’s YPAO microphone that allows the receiver to calibrate itself. You simply place it around the room to help calibrate the system to its environment. Afterware, you can then browse the settings to better fine-tune it to your own preferences if you understand the procedure of such. If not, an average user that doesn’t fully understand the technique of calibration can truly appreciate the results of the automated mic calibration without fussing with anything from there. If you are an audiophile like most of us, you will find it straightforward to tweak it past the mic setup, leaving just a few things it might miss.
Passthrough is perfect as it maximizes the ability of HDMI 2.0 by passes everything you need through to your display. From full 4K with HDR and HDCP 2.2 support to upscaling of your non-4K, it all looks great on screen. It also supports 21:9 ratio to help remove the black bars above and below some of the material you are viewing, helping to maximize the picture in certain sources.
All 7 HDMI inputs offer passthrough and you have a separate output to your Zone 2 if you are using one that also offers the same. Only the main HDMI output supports ARC if you need it though. ARC stands for audio return channel for content coming from your TV directly (such as its own built-in apps or OTA antenna source).
Upscaling looks great through the receiver given you have a 4K screen connected to it. Else this won’t apply to you much.
If you are familiar at all with the menu interface of the Aventage receivers, nothing much changed here. The features have moved around a little ever so slightly and new options have taken the place of old. However, the organization and feel of the menus are mostly the same–including that wallpapers you can choose from when there is no video being displays behind it. The interface is quite user-friendly, especially if you are an intermediate or advanced user when it comes to tech savviness.
The overall unit itself is large and heavy. Really heavy. Really, nothing has changed here as well. The unit is bulky and tall so it may not fit in all entertainment center setups, so this is something to keep in mind. You are looking at 17-1/8-inches deep, 18-5/8-inches wide and 7-1/2-inches tall. It weighs about 40lbs and you will notice this the moment you attempt to pick it up, so use caution while lifting. You would hate to drop such a fancy piece of equipment. Even more so if you tweak your back or it lands on your foot.
Make sure to plan out its placement well as it may require some customization or a different location than your old unit if it is replacing one. Unless of course you are replacing an older Advantage unit, then nothing will change for you.

An all-around wonderful AVR. Capable of complementing any environment, the quality of sound these put out by these receivers is attention grabbing. From the wattage it supplies to your speakers to the endless level of customization it offers in all directions. Finely crafted and once again takes the pedestal that Yamaha so proudly gets to sit in, the RX-A3060 is a must have for anyone who considers themself an audio enthusiast looking to maximize as many channels and/or rooms as they can. For everything else, it’s simply layers upon layers of frosting to indulge in.

Further Feature Breakdown:
High Quality Parts for Optimum Performance
The whole is greater than the sum. Every single part in an AV receiver affects the sound quality. For AVENTAGE models, extra time is taken to find (or develop) the exact parts needed to achieve the highest performance possible. Sound technicians go through a testing process to, in effect, “tune” the receiver’s sound.
Enjoy fine sound quality. The Total Purity Concept, which Yamaha has been cultivating for many years, encompasses high drive amp technology, high purity preamplification, anti-vibration technology and independent pure power supplies. All models have fully discrete power amplifiers that help minimize distortion. They also adopt pure independent power supplies, allowing dedicated power supplies for the analog and digital circuitry to prevent digital noise from affecting analog circuitry. The anti-vibration heat sinks are designed to suppress vibration from transistors and sound pressure. Independent power supplies for the DACs are designed to further eliminate noise on certain models. Down to every detail, these AV receivers are designed with full emphasis on the highest possible sound quality.
Symmetrical Power Amplifier
Designed to the details. The interior of the unit has been precisely planned, circuit-routed and built so that the left and right channels are physically and electrically isolated. This naturally maximizes channel separation but also greatly improves signal to noise ratio and also helps to achieve a wide open sound stage for a superior receiver.
Reinforced for rigidity. The interior of the receiver is reinforced with cross members in an H shape to provide an extremely rigid and stable frame. This reduces chassis vibration to virtually zero even during high volume output (seemingly minor vibrations can affect the sound), maintaining the highest audio quality.
Aluminum Front Panel
Shielded from noise. All of the AVENTAGE components feature the same sleek, clean design, with an elegant aluminum front panel and silky touch volume/selector knobs. The aluminum front panel is used to effectively shield sensitive circuitry from external noise and electronic radiation generated by dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, video monitors and so on. This ensures optimum sonic performance in the widest range of installation environments.

YPAO™– R.S.C. (Reflected Sound Control with 3D, 64-bit Precision EQ and Angle Measurement)
Sound optimized. YPAO-R.S.C. analyzes the room acoustics with the included YPAO microphone to tune your system for the best sound in your unique room. It employs R.S.C. (Reflected Sound Control) to correct early reflections for studio-quality surround sound. YPAO 3D provides automatic sound parameter optimization that maximizes the 3D sound field effectiveness of CINEMA DSP HD3 as well as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. 64-bit precision EQ calculation achieves the most natural room acoustics possible. Additionally, DSP Effect Normalization adjusts the room acoustics according to the reflected sounds of each CINEMA DSP program.
Still hear everything. Human ears have less sensitivity to high and low frequencies, especially at lower volumes. YPAO Volume applies loudness EQ correction to automatically adjust high and low frequency levels as volume changes. Using the YPAO measurement results, EQ correction is optimized to your system settings and listening environment
Virtual Presence and Surround Back Speakers
Be virtually surrounded. The Virtual Presence Speaker function makes full use of center and surround speakers to create virtual presence speakers. Enjoy CINEMA DSP 3D Mode surround sound even in environments where speaker installation is limited. In addition, This model also features a Virtual Surround Back Speaker function. Even without using surround back speakers, you can experience more natural sound from behind you.
Virtual CINEMA FRONT Surround Sound
Enjoy virtual surround sound. Even when it is impossible to install surround speakers behind the listening position, Virtual CINEMA DSP reproduces virtual surround sound filled with realism, from only front speakers. The Virtual CINEMA FRONT feature lets you place two surround speakers and a center speaker at the front to enjoy virtual surround sound with even higher quality and resolution, as well as superior rear virtual sound localization. Adding two additional front presence speakers provides a three-dimensional sound field that gives you a feeling of its height and depth and of the vertical movement of the sound. You get more flexibility to arrange your speakers inside the room, along with easy enjoyment of high quality surround sound.
Rich Bass Reproduction
Feel your lows. This exclusive low-range enhancement technology delivers richer bass than you would expect from smaller sized speakers while maintaining good localization and sound balance even with compact front speakers. When a subwoofer is used, it improves the volume of the entire low range of the speaker system, not only the front speakers, but also enhancing the bass from the subwoofer. You’ll enjoy video and music with sound that has exceptional power and presence.
Improved sound imaging. The Subwoofer Trim Control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused soundstage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is “pushed” toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim Control takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound
Advanced HDMI® Zone Switching
Full video and audio capability in a second zone. While standard HDMI zone switching can only send HD video programs to the main and second zones, advanced HDMI® zone switching from Yamaha adds the capability to choose from all audio and video sources for playback in a second zone. An on-screen graphical user interface makes it easy to browse and select content to enjoy from the second zone no matter what is being played in the Main Zone.
Zone Extra Bass for Added Bass in Zone 2 and 3
Use the Extra Bass feature to amplify bass tones, not just in your main room but also on systems in other rooms (Zones 2 and 3). Even with compact or in-wall speakers which typically lack bass, you’ll hear all your sources with powerful bass sound.
Zone Volume Equalizer for Optimum Sound Balance in Zone 2 and 3
Automatically adjusts bass and treble balance to match the volume on systems in other rooms (Zone 2 and 3). Enjoy movies and music with a natural sound quality balance even at low volumes.
Intelligent Amp Assign
Intelligent design meets multizone audio. Intelligent Amp Assign automatically assigns amplifier channels to certain speakers, depending on what speaker layout is selected. For example, in a multi-channel system, when the second zone is turned off, all channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when a second is powered on, the power to the two surround back channels will automatically be redirected to the two speakers in the second zone and the Main Zone will receive two-channels of power. Similarly, when CINEMA DSP 3D is on, the two Front Presence speakers will be powered and not the two surround back speakers. When CINEMA DSP 3D is off, this situation is reversed. Thanks to Intelligent Amp Assign, there’s no need to switch the speaker cables on the rear of the AV receiver.
