Now that all of the adults have their favorite toys, it’s time to start forcing them onto your kids too. Of course, it doesn’t all have to be as negative as that sounds. Fitbit for example is now shipping a new “Ace” fitness tracker aimed at kids 8+ in age, to help promote physical activity and teach them how important it is to their daily routine (especially the ones that don’t move much further away than the distance between their gaming chair/couch and the fridge).
What makes it a little different–other than it being smaller than their other bands–is the fact that kids can earn rewards in the form of badges and positive messages, when they achieve their goals each day. The information it collects can be tracked by parents (the app has both a “kid view” and a “parent view” depending on the phone it is installed on), and it tracks everything you’d normally find in an entry level band, including both activities and sleep. It creates reminders to get kids moving with, and provides them with challenges where they can compete (in steps) with other kids.
The tracker is waterproof and support wireless sync to your mobile device(s), allows you to change the clock face (10 total to choose from), offers up to 5 days of battery life and comes in two different colors (power purple and electric blue).
It’s definitely basic and compares to a few of their other standard entry models they have released, only its goals are more catered to the young ones. Beyond that, it’s a pricey band to keep an eye on your kids health with. They just started shipping for $99, and you can find them both online and in stores.
At the moment the reviews on the band seem to be a little mixed, suggesting that the band is too short for average 8+ year old kids. So make sure if you jump on the Fitbit train, to order it from somewhere like Amazon. This way, you can send it back without any stress on your part, if it doesn’t fit as promised.
