In a world where mice haven’t changed much in a number of years (evolutionary wise), it looks like Logitech has joined the list of companies trying to take advantage of the vertical mouse market trying to make waves by promising a more ergonomic approach for your wrist. For Logitech, it all starts with their new Logitech MX Vertical (available on Amazon and from Logitech directly).
Normally when using a mouse, the palm of your hand is always facing the surface your mouse is placed on. Some have claimed this is unnatural for your wrist, leading to pain and discomfort. However, by rotating the mouse 57 degrees, they claim this leads to a more natural experience, similar to shaking someone’s hand, and putting an end to all of your troubles. In other words, some would say that we’ve been doing it wrong all of these years.
In the end, it comes down to user-preference more than anything and many now claim to prefer the new angle over a traditional mouse. We have tested a few of these in the past ourselves and have found that the angle does indeed change the experience a bit–and some of us feel that we have experienced an increase in comfort.
We haven’t tested Logitech’s mouse just yet, so we can’t say much about it specifically. But with the models we have worked with, we found that accidental button presses were a problem. Some of this can be a result of needing to break years of habit behind using a regular mouse, but the new angle created a sense of awkwardness that led to weight shifting a little more than preferred into the direction of the button directly under the index finger, causing you to press it at times while sliding the mouse around. Possibly with an extended amount of use, this problem might correct itself. We just didn’t happen to see this during our tests.
I think is safe to say that vertical mice are becoming a new thing that is slowly taking to the market as trackballs did many years ago. Only time will tell if their benefits truly do add up over time.
The MX Vertical Mouse is available now and retails for a price of $99.99. What are your thoughts on vertical mice? Have you had any experience with one over an extended period of time? Feel free to share below in the comments.
