Wouldn’t it be interesting if the Xbox (official) game store wasn’t the only option when it comes to downloading and playing new titles on the console? There isn’t anything set in stone or announced by Microsoft officially, but Phil Spencer (CEO of Microsoft Gaming) is interested in the idea.
Spencer was recently interviewed by Polygon where the CEO explained that he was open to the idea of bringing in additional store options into the Xbox ecosystem of products. If the company where to go this route, this could mean that your favorite titles on platforms like Steam or Epic Games may one day be available on the consoles.
This would turn the Xbox consoles into an open solution for all sorts of games and platforms. Potentially, taking the same direction as some of these third-party handheld gaming systems that already do just that. Like MSI’s Claw, ASUS’ ROG Ally, or Logitech’s G Cloud.
It would make for an interesting new direction for the company. Bringing in new sources of revenue as Microsoft would likely get a piece of every sale made through these other stores when purchased using the consoles. Of course, nothing is set in stone until the company officially announces the plans. This is just the CEO’s idea of a new path ahead.
When you think about it, it could be a smart move since PC gamers typically have a number of games spread across multiple platforms. I know I do between Steam, Epic, GOG, Blizzard, and others. I wouldn’t mind having access to these via the Xbox Series X as well. A system strictly dedicated to gaming that already offers mouse and keyboard support as it is.
