When we subscribe to internet packages through ISPs, the packages we have to select from are based on download speeds more than anything else. But what if you could create your balance between a total value?
This question stems from another: are the current upload restrictions still fair? What do you think? ISPs have been severely limiting upload speeds since the beginning and their reasoning behind this has been mostly fair. They don’t want consumers running servers on a home connection, bogging down the system for others. However, I use the term “mostly fair” since technology has changed a lot over the years, leading to things like 4K being available everywhere. We aren’t just limited to streaming 4K from sources like Netflix. What about 4K security cameras around your home that you can check in on while you are away? This requires an upstream capable of delivering a stable image, and without disrupting access to other devices on your home network.
Maybe it is time to finally increase these upload restrictions. How fair is it to subscribe to a gigabit connection, but only have 30 or so Mbps of upload to play with? What if, you can balance these numbers some? Imagine having the ability to take away from your download speed some and giving that number to your upload speed. So if you subscribe to a gigabit connection, you could lower it to 800Mbps so that your upload connection can have 200Mbps (perfect for 4K cameras all over while still being able to remote into a system at home or other tasks that also require upstream usage). Seems fair right?
This made for an interesting conversation here today that we wanted to share with you to see how you’d feel about that. Join in below in the comments and share your two cents on the topic. If given the ability, would you prefer this method?
ISPs, if you are listening, feel free to reach out to us if you’d like with any comments, or possibly take this option into consideration. We think it is time to move on when it comes to these restrictions, especially as the total throughput of these networks continues to grow stronger. Cloud/shared hosting has gotten so cheap, that users are more likely to buy into proper hosting when it comes to hosting servers. So maybe find another way of protecting your networks from this, and allow legitimate technology the ability to breathe and evolve.

It is a bit of a sacrifice since you are losing the upload you had with that method, but I think it would somewhat be justifiable. Honestly I think you the balance should *add* to the upload you already have. I would take it though. I agree the upload is too low for todays tech.
